Description:

The Line Technician Position encompasses an extensive range of duties supporting the Water/Wastewater Lines Divisions.  Duties consistent with specific areas of assignment are described below.  Line technicians may work in any area of assignment based upon divisional needs.

General Objectives/Tasks Applicable to All Areas of Assignment

• Maintains familiarity with the location, size, and types of utilities within the City’s service area.

• Maintains a familiarity with City and Departmental policies and complies with such in the execution of work activities.

• Maintains a working knowledge of industry standard practices and materials.

• Works as a member of a construction crew or maintenance crew as needs arise.

• Reviews the location, material and size of lines in work areas and provides information to supervisors regarding differences with record plans and drawings.

• Documents observed customer non-compliance with City Codes (cross-connection control, watering schedules, illegal connections) and reports to supervisors for follow-up.

• Maintains a familiarity with applicable safety practices and provides input regarding the safe execution of work.

• May be assigned to work independently, as a member of a team, or in a supervisory role as assigned by a Lead, Foreman, Superintendent or other Management Level staff member.

• Maintains records of work performed commensurate with duty assignment.

• Interacts with contractors and the public in a professional manner and at a level commensurate with their duty assignment.

• Participates in the “On-call rotation” and responds to call-outs in accordance with City and Department policies.
• Performs other duties as may be assigned.

Qualifications:
• Maintenance of a Florida driver’s license • Graduation from high school, or completion of GED strongly desired • Ability to obtain Florida Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class “B” with tanker endorsements within 150 days of employment • Must maintain CDL throughout period of employment following probationary period • Ability to be on-call 24 hours per day as required to perform work in addition to regular working hours • Grade Assignments will be made on the following point system: o Line Tech I (Grade 13) - 0 to 9 Points o Line Tech II (Grade 14) – 10 to 19 Points o Line Tech III (Grade 16) – 20 to 29 Points o Line Tech IV (Grade 17) – 30 to 39 Points

Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. Reasoning: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
